MATHS IN INDIAN MONUMENTS
KANDARIYA MAHADEV TEMPLE
In India fractal geometry has been implemented in art and architecture for the last 1700 years. Fractal geometry has been used to create detailed layouts of temples. The intricate designs of each element of the temple structure were made using fractal geometry.
The design of the shikhar (spire) of the Kandariya Mahadev temple at Khajuraho built in 11th century AD has been created using fractal geometry. Here, the main shikhar is surrounded by its smaller replicas. These small shikhars are surrounded by their still smaller replicas. This pattern is repeated at decreasing scales.
CHARMINAR
Charminar is built on a square structure and has four grand arches and four minarets on each corner that are built into the main structure. It is interesting to note that the number 'char' or four and its multiples can be figured in at least 22 spots in the design of the structure.
RANAKPUR JAIN TEMPLE
Ranakpur Jain Temple in the Pali district of Rajasthan is quite popular for its exquisite architecture. It is believed that it was built by a Jain merchant named Dharna Shah in the 15th century.
It is one of the largest Jain temples in the country, dedicated to Adinath, the first Tirthankara of Jainism. It is also known for its 1,444 carved pillars. The temple is designed in such a way that in spite of the many pillars, the idol of Adinath sitting in the complex can be clearly seen from all directions.
