Tales from Teaching Practice week 11
Day 51
Day 51 marked another significant day in my teaching practice at VPS Malankara HSS Venganoor. Starting the day at 8:30 a.m., my allotted period was during the third hour with 9C. The session focused on the concept of the volume of a cylinder, employing an inquiry-based training model.
Encouraging students to analyze the described event, they initiated their own inquiry process. Using two packets of papad, I facilitated their understanding of cylinder volume by stacking them to form a cylinder. Through the inquiry process, the students grasped that the area of a cylinder base extends to the height, leading to the formula for volume. The session was highly satisfying.
Noon involved serving lunch and substitution duty at 6E during the 5th period. Further engagement took place during the 7th period in 9B. At 3:15 p.m., after the national anthem, line duty awaited. Wrapping up the day's activities, I left the school premises by 3:30 p.m. It was a day filled with interactive learning, inquiry-based teaching, and positive student engagement.
Day 52
Day 52 of my teaching practice at VPS Malankara HSS Venganoor began with the school routine at 8:30 a.m., joining the teachers' prayer. My allotted period during the second hour with 9C focused on the topic of the surface area of a cylinder.
The session was straightforward, with students quickly recognizing the necessity of calculating the curved surface area (CSA) of a cylinder in specific situations. Unfolding the cylinder revealed a direct correlation between the circumference of the circular base and the length of the rectangle formed. They also established a connection between the height of the cylinder and the breadth of the rectangle.
Building on their prior knowledge that the area of a rectangle is the product of length and breadth, they derived the formula for the CSA of a cylinder as 2πrh units. It was a session of connecting concepts and understanding the practical applications of surface area calculations.
Day 53
Day 53 of my teaching practice at VPS Malankara HSS Venganoor began with the usual routine at 8:30 a.m., participating in the teachers' prayer. My allotted period was during the second hour with 9C, focusing on a problem-solving session about the volume of cylinders.
Students successfully applied the formula for the volume of a cylinder. The highlight of the day was their grasp of the concept of volume conservation during reshaping. They demonstrated the ability to compare and analyze volumes in different geometric situations.
The day included substitution duties during the 3rd and 4th hours at 8B and 8C, respectively. During the 6th period, I went to my own class to inform them about the achievement test scheduled for Monday. At 3:15 p.m., after the national anthem, line duty awaited. Wrapping up the day's activities, I left the school premises at 3:30 p.m. It was a day filled with challenges and achievements in understanding the intricacies of volume concepts.
